The benefits of massage

Massage is perhaps one of the oldest healing traditions. Many cultures – including the Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese and Indians – were convinced of the therapeutic properties of massage and used it to treat a variety of ailments. The skin is the largest organ of the human body and is packed with nerve endings. Massage works by soothing soft tissue and encouraging relaxation. Massage is especially effective in treating ‘vicious cycle’ complaints.

For instance, a tension headache is often self-sustaining because the pain makes the sufferer clench the affected muscles even harder. This, in turn, creates more pain. A thorough neck and shoulder massage can release muscle tension and break the pain cycle.

One of the immediate benefits of massage is a feeling of deep relaxation and calm. This occurs because massage prompts the release of endorphins, the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that produce feelings of wellbeing. Levels of stress hormones, such as adrenalin, cortisol and norepinephrine, are also reduced. Studies indicate that high levels of stress hormones impair the immune system.

Some of the physical benefits of massage include:
• Reduced muscle tension
• Improved circulation
• Stimulation of the lymphatic system
• Reduction of stress hormones
• Increased joint mobility and flexibility
• Improved skin tone
• Speedier healing of soft tissue injuries
• Heightened mental alertness
• Reduced anxiety and depression.

About Peter

member

Having been told for many years that he had “The Touch”, Peter decided to meet this challenge head on, and retrain as a Massage Therapist. After completing both his Diploma in Remedial Massage and Advanced Diploma in Remedial Massage (Myotherapy), Peter is now a fully qualified, registered and insured Myotherapist.
Peter embraces both the Western and Eastern philosophies of therapeutic treatment, such as mixing the sublime pinpoint heat therapy of moxibustion, with the clinical application of dry needling, creating a mix of modalities that has given some incredible results.

There is more than one type of massage

Here is a little bit about some of the services provided.

  • Remedial Massage works to heat muscles and tendons that are damaged, impaired or knotted, tracing the discomfort back to the original cause. Specialised techniques support and speed up the body's own repair mechanisms. Passive stretching moves are also employed.

  • Relaxation massage (also known as Swedish Massage) is a system of long strokes, kneading, fiction, tapping, percussion and shaking motions that apply pressure between muscles and bones, rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. Swedish Massage feels goods, is relaxing and invigorating.

  • Dry needling has been adapted from acupuncture in that it uses fine needles applied to the musculoskeletal system in order to deactivate myofascial trigger points. Do not confuse dry needling with acupuncture. Acupuncture uses points that lie along the body’s meridians or energy channels, while myofascial dry needling uses points that are defined by western based anatomy and physiology.

    Myofascial Dry Needling

  • Cupping Therapy is an ancient Chinese form of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin; practitioners believe this mobilises blood flow in order to promote healing. Suction is created using heat (fire) or mechanical devides (hand or electric pump). The suctions draws toxins to the body's surface, and increases blood flow between the fascia (the thin covering of the muscles) and the muscle body.

    Cupping

  • Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials called 'moxa' are burned on or very near the surface of the skin. Moxa is usually made from the dried leafy material of Chinese mugwort (<em>Artemesia argyi</em> or <em>A.vlugaris</em>), but it can be made of other substances as well. The glowing end of the moxa stick is held about an inch or two above the surface of the skin until the area reddens and becomes suffused with warmth.
